6 V bulbs for teardrop taillights

#1 Post by Toby Brown »

I’ve read that the teardrop taillights like on my 65 356 SC had two light bulbs and they were not the same size. Today I had the misfortune of having both my rear taillight lenses get melted by the interior (red) section of my euro taillight lens. Both bulbs were the same size and the yellow side was a 6v 21W bulb and the interior red side was 18W L15 size. The interior Red side needs to be physically smaller or shorter so that it will not contact the lens. What and where do I find these bulbs so that I don’t melt another set of lens. Thanks

We really have some wonderful resources available for info like that. I'd call these folks come Monday morning, and they'll get you what you need:

Toby you might want to convert to LED's at this time. I have CU Layer LED's in my 65 SC with euro lenses. They fit right in to the original base, and with the red-red LED (vs red-amber), the amber side comes on bright red. Much brighter than the original bulbs.

Toby,

if you look at the owner's manual you find a list of replacement bulbs In particular the stop/ signal bulb is a 6V15W and the tail light is a 6V5W.

If you look at the plate that divides the two sections of the taillight you will see the bulbs specifications.
Blinklampe 18W/21 cp
on the other side 5w/3cp
Most all the light housings in a 356 have cast or marked what size bulb goes there.
Most of the usual vendors sell these bulbs.

Thank you all so much. My bulb in the inner running light was 18 W instead of 5 W so no wonder it burned through. I’m going to look at the LED conversion after Parade, tomorrow I’ll hunt down another bulb to try and wait on the new lens to arrive. Thanks again

You won't won't be disappointed if you get the CuLayer LED conversion, and likely you will be a lot safer as these are bright, especially for a 6v system.
