A problem in the assembly of the electric sunroof...

Dear Members,

having bought the car (1963 SC) with the sunroof taken apart long time ago by a previous owner I'm planning to reinstalling it before painting.

It seems some parts are missed (no surprise...), most evident are already bought by vendors.

But I have a problem. I try to assembly these parts but seems that the fixing screws "A" should engage a thread in part "B", which is not threaded at all in the inner hole!

I maybe miss a small part that is fitted in tapered hole ā€œCā€ acting as a nut for ā€œAā€?

Were I'm wrong? Any photo of a correct assembly?

Neither the workshop manual nor many post or photos in the web had helped me in understand...

Many thanks for any help.

John, thanks. I really appreciated your help. Indeed I already had a look at that post (great!) and had been in contact with John Pierce, but the detail I'm looking for isn't explained, yet.
If other have ideas or remembers, please, post.

Hi Maurizio,

It looks like the special bolts holding the transmission in place do not have the necessary internal threads. Those bolts are NLA, but you could make an internal thread and find the appropriate sized machine screws to hold the cable box in place.

Below are some pictures which may be useful.

Cheers,

John

The speacial nuts are a sure-loc design. They are still used in aerospace for honeycomb and composites. Thay should be still available. What are the dimensions and thread pitch, I will go through my standards book and see if I can get the specification or standard.

They should have both internal and external threads and a shoulder. Driven into a threaded hole with the slot, and then provide a anchor for the screw.

Maurizio,
I encountered the same thing. My gear box also had no internal threads on the part you are calling C. It seems they may have originally had some special type of nut there, I don't know. I did try making some nuts that would fit but was not happy with them and, if I remember right, I wound up running a tap through the bushings. I got some Phillips screws, as John mentioned, about 1-1/2 inches long from local hardware, installing them a few times to get the length right. Worked out ok.

John,

Great to hear that these are still available. Looking forward to seeing what you find.

Cheers,

JP

Thank you John, please check if these special nuts are available.
As per request: the 2 screws are M4 standard thread pitch (0.7mm).

Ok. You have a M4x0.7 anchor. The outside diameter and its threat pitch is the rest of the part number. finish the PN SL5-xx-xS. See pg 10. It's an old design, they used to be pretty common, but metric not so much. Made From Cad plated steel.

The insert in question is available from stock as in the photo below. It does not have any internal thread. Also, below is the Parts Catalog illustration detail if that helps.

As for help from the Workshop Manual -- not much help but below is the illustration on pg SB 5 which clearly shows the inserts with internal threads. Mystery continues

Stoddard sells the "Covering Cap Screw" for the 911 sunroof, but it does not have the M4 internal thread. PN: 901-564-661-05

So we already posted that. John, in your list Electric T6 Sunroof Parts List.xlsx [44.02 KiB] you have the 356 version of this screw 644-564-605-50 do you have any specification of this part? How and where is it installed?

Hi Brad,

The Covering Screw Cap for the 356 SR has the same OD as the 911 part, but with internal M4 threads.

Thank you to all for the contributions.
John Brooks, your suggested shur-lok is, per design, exactly what were used, I suppose.
But there is not the metric version we need.

Within few weeks I will have access to another car, same model, same year with another sunroof which we will need to inspect.

I will take some photos and I will be back to you all.

Then, I will made a small batch of screws exactly as the originals. If someone is interested (Brad?), please, contact me in advance.
