Re: What is it?
the one off tri-engined 912 with 3 engines fused together behind the rear axle? Project was cancelled because they could not find enough weight to keep the front wheels on the ground (when parked)

Okay, as mentioned Jacques was the first to correctly identify the crank. CJ correctly identified the car it was ran in, the PA Spyder in a late iteration. It is indeed an original crankshaft out of the 16 cylinder engine.
CJ raises an interesting question as to what the internal engineering number was for this engine. As stated 912 is the internal number for the 12 cylinder 917 engine. The Ludvigsen book will probably tell us but CJ might be right that it is 917. The crank has a 917 part number.
The size and the weight of the crank are massive. Will make for a cool display piece/lamp

You have the crank mounted on a flywheel. As installed the crank drove the layshaft underneath through the gear mounted in the middle of the shaft.
It was the layshaft that had the flywheel not the crankshaft.
How did you mount the flywheel? were there threaded holes at the end?
Happy Birthday 356 Roadster, Porsche Nr 1. 70 years young today!!!!
