Install 741 Transmission in C

#1 Post by Carl Swirsding »

In a few days I will be lifting my freshly rebuilt 741 transmission into my C coupe. When lifting the transmission into place (I’m planning to use a floor jack) how do I get the axle tubes inserted into the swing arms (which are sprung down)?

TIA,

Carl

They will go pretty easily as they flop around. You will need a couple of extra hands to guide them while you keep the trans from falling off the jack. It is not too hard.

Or if alone you can use tie down straps to the bumper mounts. Jack up trans and bolt your hoop in place loosely. Similar to when changing swing plate bushings. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=23609&hilit=swing+a ... eplacement I also think it helps to use two jacks. One front and one rear of the transmission. Tighten the hoop bolts after you have installed the front mounts.

I seem to recall that you can pull the axle tubes aft far enough to get them engaged in the spring arms after the transmission is installed. This is what you do when you adjust the angle of the spring arms when changing the rear camber.

Hi Carl,
Here's a write up I did awhile ago on lowering the rear suspension. It includes unbolding the spring plate and re-bolting it up. I had no problem doing it all with the trans installed. Also, I may be available this evening or tomorrow evening to help you do the job if you'd like. Email me via my profile if you'd like to coordinate.
