62 Notchback that sold on BAT for $89,000
Having almost finished a 61 notchback with close to 1,000 hrs of retirement time, 3 yrs and a thick file of receipts, I would like to start a discussion of this sale and where the owner goes next.

Farther upside down? I was shocked by the sale price. Of course I have no reference for how much Notches go for so I could be all wet. Adam might have an opinion to share.

I would be interested in whether this is seen as a high price....I guess if you really want a notchback there are not too many about .

Possibly this collectors magazine article caused some bidders to be more interested: https://www.watchcollectinglifestyle.co ... y-duckling. Oddly the photos in the article seem to show a Karmann body coupe.

Lynn, I couldn't tell from your initial post, are you hoping yours is worth a similar amount, or hoping it is worth much more than that? I don't know the values personally, just trying to understand the question.

My guess is that even Stevie Wonder(blind with a lot of money) would have walked away from that car.
The car needs a COMPLETE restoration.
I like the Notches and especially the twin grill but I wouldn't pay over $20K for that car. A beautifully restored Notch should bring as much as a coupe but rarely are Notches that nice. I would pay $120k for a perfect '62 Notch in great colors with the original S90 engine.

I recently sold my non matching t6 notch in better shape than the bat car for 45k and was happy it sold at all.

Being an auction, it only takes 2 people wanting a car. A running/ driving A coupe sold on BAT yesterday for 60K, so I would never use an auction site as an indicator of the market.

Notches are weird, they are rarely worth more than standard coupes and usually trail behind by about 10-15%. But, they are rare, especially the T6's notches, I think only 720 or so were made. So you can find the guy, or in this case 2 guys, who want something different and duke it out. You aren't going to get this kind of fever for a standard coupe.
But (again), having one or a few notches go for good money is not a market make, so before anyone prices their's another 30%, or speculates on buying one based on this, know that usually the market corrects for a few exceptions.
I do know this about Notches, the rarity of them is directly related to their undesirability when new, not based on a strategic sales approach, like the Carrera, RS, or GT3. The notch was not a plan by Porsche to create a rare collector car, they just didn't sell, so by the time the T6 came out, they didn't make many.
Chuck Stoddard told a funny story at the Akron holiday about needing more cars and calling PCNA in NJ, the Porsche guy said he had 4 in stock and would get them on a truck toot suite, but they were all Karmann coupes aka Notchbacks. Chuck declined, said he still had the last two they sent, and he couldn't sell those. The Porsche rep grumbled that they all secretly wished the Notchbacks would fall off the boat, nobody wanted them.
But if anyone wants a car rarer than a Speedster, give me a call, I have a T6 Notch, so far, no takers...

Also as is always the case any individual car has to be evaluated on it's own merits. Anyone interested in buying a 63 Normal with terrible paint and an obvious crack in the drivers side rocker panel among other defects-for 89K? This was another feeding frenzy that all sellers hope for.

I'll give another reason why you can't hang your hat on any one or two sales.
Recently I sold two A Coupes within a couple of months of each other.
1. Both had rust.
2. Both needed full restoration
The yellow one was a rare color originally and matching numbers, the other car was not. The yellow car sold for $68,000, because several guys really got excited about it. The other car sold for $25,000. I think both of these are extremes, for different reasons. I wouldn't use either as a rock solid comp when buying a car. The $25,000 seemed low, and the $68,000 seemed high.
A Coupe projects are normally $30,000-50,000, both of these are outside that window. But the market is still the market.

Aquamarine blue is as Adam said a stunning color in person but the car has to be washed and waxed for best effect and I am not good at doing that. Here are two pictures of it looking good.
I think the contrasting background really screwed the color up but I think the one without the snow is closer to correct.
