Hi Again,
Does anybody know if I can use a 72' 914 transaxle, bolted to an early 912 as a test mount.. To eventually put in my 356.. "Say that 10 times fast"
Using the 356 starter, will the 912 Flywheel mesh?

thanks much,
Bill

No, they will not mesh. You need a 912 starter, not sure if the 914 one would work or not.

Bill, I think you will find that a 12 volt VW starter will fit and they are cheap in junkyards, and not that expensive new from your local parts store.

You may not find many 45 year old starters in your local junk yard.

My engine testing is done w/a 914 trans, case; Changing to a 912 to fit into a 356, the flywheel must be changed and if the engine is converted to 12V, I just use a 6V starter having a 12V solenoid.

EASY Jim worked at "All Foreign" wrecking yard in the late '60s. I bought the first (of several) C disc brake conversion kits from him about then, along with a 741 'box I stuck in the pre-A Speedster.
Prolly can't do that anymore.

You mean used 356 parts were only five years old? I can't comprehend that!

Bill,

A 6V stater has larger teeth and won't ingage to a 12V flywheel having smaller teeth; A 12V starter w/its smaller teeth will engage the larger 6V teeth, but eventually it'll wear them out!

Actually My 356 starter will not work as they have the hole that receives the end of the starter shaft built into the 356 bell housing. The 914 trans does not have this shaft bushing, so it needs a starter where only the gear comes out. As in the Top Picture!!

Is a 912 starter like a 356 or like the Top picture?

You need a SR17X like the top pic for a 914 trans.

Going back into my memory I think also a VW Auto-stick-shift (ASS) starter will work, if you stumbled onto one.

And we have Ignition!!!
912 engine, 912 Starter, 914 Trans..

Starts good, sounds to run strong but a little rough. Is there a good write up on nuts to bolt tune up. Actually I just need a Solex fine tuning guide, never had Solex before.
I did set the float lever. Pretty easy on solex. Set the jets to 1 1/2 turns out, but idles pretty high.

It also does some back firing, what causes that, just out of tune?

Some pic of my setup.. Thanks for the words of wisdom!!!
