Euro Muffler Support
Hi Folks,
I've been away a few years. Happy to be back!
I have an SC coupe with the Euro Heat System.
Im trying to understand how the muffler is supported in the car. The diagram below lists several items that I dont seem to have on my car. Does anyone have pics of how these mufflers are supported in the car, especially any attachment points beside the heat exchangers and exhaust pipes?
I'm specifically interested in where the following assemblies attach to the car and the muffler.
1) items 6-9
2) items 18-22
3) items 13-16
Thanks in advance!
Dan

Re: Euro Muffler Support
Dan,
Items 6-9 are used to support the muffler to the engine-also don't be tempted to use American exhaust claps at the slip joints-you will deform the pipes.
Items 18-22 attach just behind the slip joints and provide an anti-rattle function.
Items 13-16 attach to the heater boxes under cylinders 1&3 and provide a support and anti-rattle function.
I'll bet you're missing the carb. pre heaters that are attached at one end on a tube on the heater box and terminate with a special fitting that attaches to the center intake manifold bolt.
For a "good" example of how to do it wrong check out the Bali blue 356 currently on Bat!

Hi Tim,
Thanks for your reply. Ill have to check that carb heater also. Dont recall seeing anything there either.
I did see your post on BAT and that is what prompted this discussion.
As always thanks again for your learned advice.
Best
Dan

Wow, Tim, you are not kidding. You would think that if Ruznak was the owner, that they would do it right. Not even close. Makes you wonder.
These little guys are the carb preheaters, with a tube that goes from the top of the heat exchanger to the end of these....

Re: Euro Muffler Support
Jim,
The carb. pre-heaters on E-bay are the late type that have an "on/off" valve in the body that is operated by the wire handle on the exterior. The early type w/o the valve are "on" 24/7-great if you do all your driving in Norway in the winter, not so good for use in more temperate climates- I plug the hoses, with tin foil, on customer cars for warm weather operation.

Re: Euro Muffler Support
Tim, that must have been very early--my May 1963 build has the on/off wire handles, and it was a fairly early Euro system. Think, if I can recall (anything), that the system was mandated in January '63...

Re: Euro Muffler Support
Dan - I did an article on the 'Euro' heater a few issues back that has many pictures of the parts.
Part number 6 was changed in production at some point and made longer, which eliminated the spacer no. 7 and did not require the longer studs. The mounts attach to the four lower vertical third piece studs.

Dan,
Someone sent this image to me a while back to ID the Euro system for the Full Flow fitment, but it's also been helpful in other cases: Outlined are parts #6, fastened to the timing cover.

Also note on Ron's picture parts numbered 18-22 and early carb. pre-heaters w/o valves.

The article I refer to above is in the site magazine archive
https://porsche356registry-production-p ... 1519157297
Volume 41/No. 3; Sept/Oct 2017; pages 64-68
PS - I was unaware that there were two versions of the carb heater nozzle - one with and one without the close-off valve

Took me a while to find them, but here they are outlined: Greg, I'd forgotten that; can I use it to help ID the engine for the Full Flow kits?

A shot of the bands that go around the muffler and onto the mounts Ron pointed out:
You can see his oil filter installed.

Can I copy that image to show that the filter DOES fit with the Euro heater system.

Re: Euro Muffler Support
I put a system together a few years ago and found that I only had one of the supports that bolt to the third piece so I took it to my fabricator and had him make another. In my wisdom I asked him to make it a mirror image of the one that I had. It came out perfect but I later found out that the Factory used the same part for both sides. Both parts also have the hole for the tach cable and they both face the same way. So if you see a car with two different supports under there you'll know that it was from me. BTW, my guy did make a pattern of the part so if you need them Dan, I can have him make a couple more. KTF
