abcpartswerks.com or Zims. They both rebuild correctly themselves abc or have someone local who rebuilds for years and does it right -Zims. and use a new bushing!!! Both are Vendors. ABC usually has an ad in the Registry magazine.

Thanks Doug. I have read ABC's ad but didn't think of Zim's. Thanks.

I have used ABC with good results. I think Doug Darrah may have retired and his kids running it now but Not sure.

You won't go wrong with either of the two vendors listed. I am very pleased with the generator purchased from ABC some time ago and have had similar experiences with Zim's.

I have a B coupe, bought a rebuilt VW starter from Pep Boys, $45 exchange and came with a new brass bushing. Had it in stock. Works great and has lifetime guarantee.

I have a VW starter in my C coupe. I got it from Mike Petullo at Automotive Electric Industries(AEI) in Los Alamitos, CA. The solenoid is in the "wrong" position (I couldn't care less) and it works great. 6V of course.

Over 30 yrs ago, I bought a new VW 6 volt starter from JC Whitney, and installed it in my A coupe. It has worked flawlessly. About 10 yrs ago, I converted the car to 12 volts, using the same starter with a 12 volt solenoid. Except for "gronking" the flywheel every 50 or so starts, it never complains, even when I forget to turn on the gas.

I have the Stoddard :-Otorque one, works fine but it sounds quite different, which is a little unsatisfying.
