Did people pay too much? Is any 912 worth $100k?

If the 4 cam was still in the bread delivery van it was not just a bargain but a steal.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

Another good reason to not buy a 912? Maybe if it was a perfect very early 1965. That said I do know a guy that paid $300k to restore his 69 912 which was a graduation present from his father. Makes you wonder what went on in that car.

I was there for the preview on Friday. The 912 was ultra low mileage(under 10,000 if I remember correctly), tangerine orange, all original paint. A real time capsule.

Yes, strong money in some sense but most of the cars were unrestored and low mileage examples. If you look at the pre-auction estimates very few lots came in at or above estimate

Was there anything special about the 1967 911S?

The delivery van did NOT have the 4-cam anymore.

The 67S had a folder 6 inches thick with records from day 1. It was silver(all original except for the front bumper) Mid 20's mileage, interior original and nearly perfect. 15x4.5 fuchs, period luggage, all matching #s. Another time capsule.

As Vic commented, the sedan delivery went without the four-cam engine. I was told that a Porsche pushrod engine went with it. The four-cam engine had been removed when they became so valuable, and the plan was to install a pushrod engine. The installation never happened. Someone came along who "had to have the engine" once it was out, so it was sold to him. A 1500 Carrera four-cam engine case sold for about $26,000; I think it was one I sold Dixon maybe 15 years ago for much less.

There were over 300 lots of memorabilia, most of it Porsche items. Prices on many of the memorabilia items were quite high. A few days before the auction there were about 300 registered bidders (on and off site). I heard there were many additional last minute bidders. Twenty countries were represented by the bidders. A 1959 poster that's probably worth $1200 (and poorly dry mounted) sold for $3600 ---- must have gone to a phone bidder. A half-section of a 356 sold for $30,000. If you wanted the driver's side of a 356 to display on your wall, this was the car for you. I heard this car and a similar 911 were each very heavy ---- I'm sure someone had fun getting them off the wall and transporting them after the auction.

I understand that the bidder's fee for memorabilia lots was 20%, and that the fee on cars was 12%. The prices above include the bidder's fee.

Yes, Jim, the memorabilia prices were abnormally high. I bid on four items but got none. Watched some of it online--with about 200 other such bidders. The old edition of the Carrera RS book went for crazy money, especially when you can buy a new current edition for one-third of what was paid. The prices mirrored those at the October 2018 auction in Atlanta. I'm thinking of sending all my "stuff" to RM/Sotheby's!

After seeing what that Ski-Bob went for I started thinking leaving mine in the window might be a bad idea!
