Re: Which year 356 to purchase
Except for one year I have continually owned 356 cars since 1963. Recently both my car have undergone restoration and up dating. I NO LONGER DRIVE THESE CARS DAILY. They offer no safety features. No door guard beams, no collapsible steering column, no passive restraint system, poor chassis design, and at best are suitable for speeds below 75MPH. As a shop owner Zim's repairs many 356 cars that suffer from deferred maintenance! or repairs that were incorrectly done. Should you purchase one of these cars and be in an accident, besides your bodily harm (read hospitalization) repair of your vehicle will be time consuming and expensive. Classic car insurance may not cover this since it is daily transportation. Last month my 911 was parked perpendicular to the street when someone backed across a wide street and shoved the car onto the sidewalk. The insurance check arrived yesterday now I have to sue the driver who hit me for the depreciated value of the car since Car Fax will show it has been in an accident. Driving and traffic are just not fun any more. al zim

Re: Which year 356 to purchase
According to your criteria I'd find the best (65) you can buy. Contrary to previously stated high production numbers for 64-65, there were over 14K 64's built but only 1689 65's built so they are going to be more desirable as time goes on, last of the generation plus the most advanced of the series. Running/Driving will keep you a lot happier. Rust free or near it in body and good mechanicals.
Next best option is to find a well built running/driving late A car that's been modified with disk brakes from a C car. You get the earlier body with the better mechanicals. That's if originality is not a priority.
Take your time, do a lot of research and have a budget in mind then add 10-15% to that. The early cars are going to be more expensive and harder to find replacement parts over time but the later cars can add up too if they are not well sorted out before buying.

Anytime you have 4-5 grainy, chopped pictures, a strange generic description, and a really cheap price, you can bet it's a scam. I bet he will take a deposit though.M Penta wrote:If not a scam, a good deal this 64' in Michigan. Anyone familiar with this car? Pics definitely not in Michigan though!

I figured it was, but have not noticed any on Autotrader Classic yet. One has to wonder how these scammers actually get a deposit...

Western Union or Walmart transfer usually. If you notice they always pick a place not many people will be from. So almost everyone responding will be from far away. You ever see these scams in LA or Atlanta, or a big city.M Penta wrote:I figured it was, but have not noticed any on Autotrader Classic yet. They also have your email address and phone number if you respond. Do you think a database might be sold also?

Re: Which year 356 to purchase
The red C was recently sold by Dusty Cars in Calif. This ad is a scam. If you look at the Autotrader Classics page, all of the cars offered at a REALLY good price, are by private sellers. And, as previously noted, they're always in some unknown Podunk town ( and one city in Michigan) in the middle of nowhere. Buyer Beware!
P.S. They only have "reply by email", never a phone contact.
