How to install wide 5 wheels on disc brake conversion?

#1 Post by Jay Aldeguer »

Hello Gents,

I recently installed a complete set of C disc brakes on my '59 A outlaw, how can I install the original wide 5 wheels now that the brakes had been converted? Is there any adaptor out there that can help us achieve this?

Thanks.

Jay

Do you have to install studs in the adaptor?

Jay, I'd like to know how this goes. Please post pics of the result, with and without hubcap. I'm thinking you'd need hubcaps since there will not be a brake drum to see.

You may be able to run those Skinz drum thingies.

Gonna be Debbie Downer here.
The adapters are ~1/2" thick.
Standard engineering practice requires thread engagement of 1-1/2 X diameter. 14mm X 1.5 = 21mm, >3/4".
For an example of what the factory thought was appropriate, check the 'length' of a wheel stud nut; from memory, it's somewhere close to that dim.
But it's not my car.

Any idea how thick the threaded portion of a VW drum is, probably not nearly that thick, but I don't have one here to measure.

Martin, I use the VW studs here: http://www.precisionmatters.biz/wheel-b ... dapter.php
If we guess on the high side of a 3mm grip-length, that still leaves something like 20mm of thread and I don't think they are designed for a bunch of bare thread hanging inside the drum; they'd be shorter.
And Porsches are supposed to deliver high lateral accels, so...

I am not sure what a grip length is, but a VW lug bolt has 15mm of threads. 12mm diameter, and I agree that they were not thinking of lateral loads, or just enough to get the swing axles unhappy.

Grip-length is the portion between the bottom of the head (where it lands on the part) and where it enters the female threads.
So a VW 12mm stud has 15mm of threads which is still well over 1/2", and that for the Bug (and derivatives). The newer 14mm bolts are far longer than that, while the factory lug nuts for 356s are far beyond 1/2" in length.
And, again, it is not my car.

If you are using VW bolts you torque will have to be substantially less than 75 ft lbs. When we used a 4 way wrench I found on checking with a torque wrench that the wheels were held on by 35 to 40 ft. Lbs. al zim
