In fact, through engine # 903581 (build number 3481) the build number + 900100 gives the engine number. After that the relationship slowly diverges through the 901/01 (Solex carb) engines.Vic Skirmants wrote:One reason for the variations in the 356 engine assembly number, is that those numbers included ALL 356 engine numbers; industrial engines, etc. 911 engines were pretty homogeneous; standard engines, with only an occasional race engine.

Re: Harry Pellow's "case casting number"
Doug D. posted the " Porsche Production Book " page for me. " Thanks Doug ! "
Just thought I would post the "Porsche Production Book" picture of a page from August 1957 this was posted in a Registry article volume 23 number 6 April 2000 written by Dick Koenig. This clearly shows several things too include engine serial number and the engine Internal work order number which I believe is the number stamped on the top of one case half.
Great article, would be worth the registry to republish this article.

Re: Harry Pellow's "case casting number"
We have talked about a lot of different numbers on the case - here are pictures ...
Serial Number - this is a 912 case from 1967 The 'Internal Number' on the left - 90511 - very early 912, and the Engine Type - 616/36 Case half match number Third piece match number - Porsche was soon to stop stamping the 912 third piece and only the case halves were stamped Casting date - In this case, July/1965

Thanks Greg. This is a very good set of numbers. On the inside of the third piece there may also be a casting date, however I also look for the casting part number and manufacturer logo.
