Head Rest Brackets

#1 Post by Eric McKinley »

I have been trying to find the small screws that hold the head rest brackets on the seat backs of a 356c.

A classified ad has produced no results.

If anyone has 8 they would like to sell please get in touch.

Eric:

These are just hardware store items.. are they not? If you can identify exactly what they are supposed to be, you should be able to order them from Mc Master- Carr or similar in the UK.

The screws are listed as B 4.9x16 DIN 7973. They are chrome, self-tapping, Phillips head.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I have found from past experience that trying to get anything from hardware shops especially in the UK is not an easy task. Lots of calls explaining to the 16 year old on the till what you need.

To coin a phrase I want the baby but not the labour, if anyone has any they would like to sell please get in touch.

Hi Eric, I sent you an email with a link to a supplier of chrome screws. He is in Germany. The screws are perfect. Here is a link to 4,8 x 16 Din 7983. Chrome with phillips head. The 7973 that Mike has suggested is slot head. I can't remember which is correct, and Mike could be right in suggesting slot head.

If you need slot head, I'm sure you will find this excellent seller will have them.
Sorry you didn't get my email, and hope this helps. Cheers, jim

Jim,

Thank you very much, I shall get onto ebay tonight and order these.

One step closer, I now need to find an original head rest.

I have seen vendors producing reproductions however it is my intention to get an original for the passenger side only.

Thanks for the clarification, Jim. I'll do some digging to see if I can find the factory part number of the screws.

To confirm Jim's correction, in the Type 356 B workshop manual, section TRA 9, it notes the screws as
B 4.9 x 16 DIN 7973 and the diagram shows slotted screws.

Head Rest Bracket mounting screws

#9 Post by Tom Wavrin »

From my search a UK supplier:
http://www.pts-uk.com/Products/Self_Tap ... AB_Tappers
scroll down to find the 4.8 x 16 slotted
Minimum purchase is a 100 screw box. I would be interested in 8.
Is this the same as an M5 x 16?

I think the hole is 5mm on the headrest tab so a screw has to be slightly smaller to bite.

Screws like that did not originate in the metric system. Its ancestor is a #10 x 5/8 slotted head oval. They got metric designations in the early post war years. You can get the imperial version at a store that sells yacht hardware?

An M-5 is a machine screw, not a sheet metal/wood screw
