S-90 Fan Shroud Silver Color

#1 Post by JohnPierce »

Hi Group.

I've searched the archives without success. Maybe the answer was in the old Registry Forum, but those posts are no longer available.

I'm looking to powder coat my S-90 fan shroud and am looking to find what people have used as a comparable color. A recommendation for a rattle can color would also work as I can then match up the powder. I know that Stoddard/NLA sells one, but I'd like to source it locally. I could also order a swatch from Willhoit if no one has a color.

There's a second related question: has anyone seen a European heater fan shroud in silver or were they all painted gray? There a nice article in the archives regarding fan shrouds, but it doesn't mention the European version. https://porsche356registry.org/article/231

Thanks for the help.

Wow, I didn't realize the fans were different, are they? It would be nice to get a little more flow.

I'm sure there are many reasonable choice. I found this one to my liking and it appears to be a pretty close match to the original S90 color. Tiger Drylac 38 is very durable coating. The color is RAL 7035 and Tiger's number is 38/70035 I've included another color that I considered and rejected. Don't put too much weight into how this color looks on your computer screen; you need to see it in person to be sure.

During my 50+ years of rebuilds, I've seen the black F/shrouds were Semi-Gloss; Not Gloss Black--except my Carrera sheet metal including the fuel tank.
I just 2-Super F/shrouds powder painted w/Stardust Silver Metalic and they turned out very nicely.

Hi Jim,

It's kinda of hard to see in the pix, but it looks like you switched from the C/SC light gray to the S-90 metallic silver. Either way it looks nice. Is that Fjord Green on the body?

Cheers,

John

Actually, that is the original color on the shroud. All of the S90's I've seen are the same white-ish grey--as is this one; I guess it's not too evident from the picture that it was as close to the original color as we could get. The car is Smyrna Green. Maybe the early S-90's are silver, but I've yet to see one.

They were Silver Metalic which was the same as the Supers. The Gray was introduced for the C/SC series.

I'll call the shop which did the powder paint-work.

There have been many discussions about whether the S90 had a grey shroud at one point. The fan shroud discussion in the reference material used to have the gist of this, but some is now missing, including the picture of the row of S90's in the factory --with grey shrouds.

Guys,

The Stardust Sliver metallic paint which the local shop uses is from HKZO Nobel. (all over the country)
They get it from the Reading, PA. location.

It's probably Akzo Nobel, chemical company from the Netherlands.
