356a shift boot

#1 Post by Robert Thiemrodt »

Anyone have an original shift boot they would part with? I ordered a new one from Sierre Madre, it cracked in about a month. They were good enough to send me another one, it cracked in first two weeks. Someone on the board suggested International Merchantile..... they don't sell one.

At this point I'm thinking an original, if in good shape may be the way to go......thoughts?????

This is not just a problem with reproduction Porsche parts. The rubber fork gaiters available today for old British motorcycles also crack and split very quickly. I think a lot of the rubber parts are made overseas and, while they look OK, the manufacturers use the cheapest material they can get away with. I have found that if I douse reproduction fork gaiters in Vinylex, and let them soak in a ziplock for a few days or a few weeks, it extends their service life quite a bit. You might give that a try if you can't find an original shift boot.

Vinylex is a Lexol product that is made to condition and preserve vinyl, plastic, and rubber. It supposedly "penetrates below the surface to restore underlying plasticizers." It's similar to Armor-All, but seems to me to work better.

Thanks Guys,
Think I'll go with the VW boot and soak in Vinylex!! This is getting frustrating.
