Need help identifying NOS nipple hub caps

#1 Post by michael rogers »

Hi Everyone, I scored a bunch of Porsche "Stuff" and in the lot was these NOS nipple hub caps still in the OG wrappers. With them are some that I suspect are not OG and probably reproductions. Is there a way to tell by the nut on the back that holds on the crest? Thanks for your help

The picture with the hex nut is the one from the Porsche packaging. They factory parts sticker does say "made in Western Germany" so I guess that dates it prior to 1989ish.

There were some aftermarket 'nipple hub caps' which were not correct in their shape--especially at the outer edge being a flat diameter (vs. a taper) which prevented the cap to fit flush into the center recess of the wheel--and sometimes, they'd 'pop off'!
This pertains to the drum brake hubcaps.

I have been paying attention to this for many years. I have never seen any Super hubcaps with dates. Moons and C hubcaps, yes.

Puzzling state of affairs, since I think Lemmerz made all of them.

I see the label is PORSCHE AG- that implies they were made after 1972. Doesn't mean they aren't fantastic hub caps, just means they were not made in the 50's or 60's as there was no PORSCHE AG then.

Still waiting for an answer. Did these hubcaps ever have dates stamped into them?

I am leaning towards agreeing with you. At one time, I had hundreds of hub caps to use for evidence. Since retirement, not so much. I can't actually produce a Super hubcap with a date stamp, so I would respectfully like to retract my statement about date stamps on Super Hubcaps. I'm the guy who stated, unequivocally, that all C hubcaps with no crest were date stamped 3/63 and haven't been proven wrong in 20 years. Sorry for creating turmoil.

I've never seen dates on Super nipple hubcaps, and I've always checked. Trust me, if they had dates, I would be date matching them, just like the wheels. I find it very hard to believe that of the thousands of these hub caps I've had, the ones I had were all repros without dates. With the baby moon caps it works out to about a 50/50 ratio of what arrives, about 50% real with dates and 50% repro.

Adam........I think that is enough evidence to say "no dates on super hubcaps"
