finish of sound insulation in engine compartment

#1 Post by Jim Clement »

I know this has been asked before..
what is the best way to finish the sound insulation (from Stoddard) to make it look good.
I have my engine out now, and was not happy with the plain finish of the new sound proofing.
it looks gray.. not as black as the original.
I would love to spray the whole area with some tar type of product, that would be messy for sure..

is it just as simple as black rattle car spray paint ?

I applied Satin Black paint with a sponge brush as I didn’t want overspray.

You could shoot it with Wurth undercoating.

I used rustoleum satin black paint applied with a 1 inch brush, I'm happy with the results.

That looks good.
Did you paint everything, or just the sound proofing ?

Jim I painted the sound proofing and the parts of metal that were in there also, everything will look the same in the engine area.

Jim,
Thank you for the nice comment. We spray a light coating of undercoat, let dry and spray with Satin Black

Jim, I would recommend using a two component stain black urethane or epoxy that will not soften or melt with exposure to oil and especially gas. It can be applied with a brush, but you do need a respirator and air circulation. Keeping clean will also be much easier than with body schutz or single stage paint.

This was as-delivered from Bill P. some years back; I didn't do anything to it, since it looked pretty close to the undamaged parts that came out:

(added by edit)
It's been a while, so whether I noticed this at the time is open to question, but take a look at this:

This is a Karmann car, early '65, and the factory undercoat is still on that bent-down tab (it was straightened and rebent on installation), and it pretty much matches the sound-mat finish. I'd say the mat got undercoating as Jim suggests above.

If you want to retain the surface finish of the tar paper insulation, and simply make it black, you can use black stencil ink applied with a foam brush. Once applied and dry it is not affected by water, oil or gasoline. I did this when I installed the Stoddard kit in my 64C cab in 1999 and it has stood the test of time.
