It may be that the floor of your fuel filler area has been replaced in the past.

If my (failing) memory serves me correctly, my friend's '62 doesn't have the drain tube. However, I'll check the B parts manuals including the supplement.

Fuel Filler and Air Vent Box B T-6

#18 Post by Tom Wavrin »

There was no evidence of replacement of the fuel filler cup when we brought the car down to bare metal. The car hadn't been wrecked and was solid throughout. It had been in a fellow's collection since the mid-70's. Karmann serial # 202159 in case someone has a car close to this for reference. Thanks Mike!

The supplemental B parts manual shows only the metal vent pipe, not the plastic drain tube. The C parts manual doesn't indicate any changes except from bottom sender to top sender fuel tank with other related changes such as sender, sender cover, etc.

There may be a factory supplement issued. More digging....

Factory service bulletin F07 issued in '62 indicates the addition of a water drain tube in the fuel filler cup. I'm checking to see if I have a copy of it.

O.k. Thanks to the late Roy Lock (r.i.p), I have the service bulletin. The particulars:
Service Bulletin F7 dated April 26, 1962.
Applies to:
Coupes: 117601-119599; 210001-210239
Cabriolets: 155601-156459
Hardtops: 201601-202299

I'm paraphrasing:

It states that the water drain may become clogged. Some vehicles may have a 17mm hole already in the fuel filler cup.

The following parts are needed:
Sleeve: 644.503.309.06
Plastic benzene resistant hose: 16x20x650 mm's; 644.201.931.06
Hose clamp: 5x170 SN 902
Norma clamp: 1x20 DIN72571 Zn 9
Hexagon screw: M5x10, DIN 933, gal Zn 9
Hex nut: M5, DIN 934, gal Zn 9
Spring washer: B5 DIN 137 bost.

Insert the sleeve into the 17 mm hole and fix one end with Teroson cement. Slip on the plastic hose and secure it with the hose clamp. Fasten the hose to the lateral sheeting of the front compartment with the Norma clamp and nut, bolt and washer.

If I read it correctly, the bulletin goes on to say that if there isn't a hole, drill a 10mm hole in the deepest recess of the filler cup and insert a grommet 644.025.612.00. It doesn't say if you then attach the plastic pipe as described above or leave it like that.

Finally, the bulletin states that the drain was standard from coupes 119600/210240 and cabs 156460.

I hope this helps,

Mike

John: I'm in the process of restoring a drain box for a '64 cab. It had been left in place for at least two paintings (removing Irish green and red from the screen). The two L brackets were painted with green primer as found on the windshield wiper bracket and held in place by two NSF 6mm hex bolts, flat and lock washers. I found a decent match for the color: Duplicolor Self-etching primer. However, rather than painting them with the primer, I cleaned and painted them with Wurth Satin black.
