Nerf bars and bumper bolt holes
I'm finally returning to my now 20-year '62B T6 project and have a question about installing nerf bars, or rather how to deal with the lack of bumpers. On the rear fenders there are indentations where the bumper ends bolt to the fender brackets. When eliminating the bumpers, should the fenders still be secured to the brackets by bolting or welding, or can they just "float"? Any suggestions on dealing with the bolt holes, ie plugs, etc? I've looked over photos of nerf'd cars but can't see this detail.
Anyone know where I can find front and rear nerf bars?
Is George Tyler and Sons of Maine still in business? Their old email address bounces.
Thanks and still KTF,

Re: Nerf bars and bumper bolt holes
No, Parker Tyler has been retired for a while. Be careful buying Nerf Bars as the A bars (rears) will not work on a B/C car. Years ago when I took the bumpers off my Sc I found a red running light with a center bolt on it and wired it up to the taillights. I served to hold the fender brace in place, covered the hole and provided a nice side running light. I think that was back when the Feds required side marker lights on cars (1968). I eventually went back to the stock bumpers and took off the lights and threw them in a box. I saw them a couple of weeks ago so if you want to go that way let me know, they're yours for the cost of postage. KTF

Thanks Tom. I sent you a PM.
Do the nerf bars shown look like they would fit a B/T6?

Re: Nerf bars and bumper bolt holes
The fronts will work as they are straight on A, B, & C but I think the rears shown are for an A. Looking at the Stoddard diagram of bumpers you can see how they step down to allow the bar to clear the lower valance panel. I'll have to look again at my A coupe tonight to be sure. The Stoddard diagram also shows a bit of a dip on B/C supports, I thought they were straight. Anybody else ?

Gordon,
This is what the front should look like, they need to clear the bottom.
I have these, only the front though if it is something that you need.
In relation to covering the holes again I have these if you need them just pm me.
I made these a number of years back when the idea of outlawing the car appealed to me.

Gordon, I weld in a round piece where the rear bumper attaches to the fender. Finish it and paint to match. Anything else looks like a patch. Yes, attach the bumper bracket to the repair. .................Jim.

Re: Nerf bars and bumper bolt holes
I don't know of anyone currently making nerf bars for T6 and C I do have them on the Winter Project Outlaw I bought. A Detroit area member Outlawed the car in the late 70's.

What did you do where the bumper ends attach to the rear fender mounts?

Re: Nerf bars and bumper bolt holes
Well for those of us with "chicken outlaws" (i.e. easily reversible), welding up does not offer the solution. Here is what I did on TUB BLUE. A simple reflector in the side hole. And Karman Ghia grommets where the nerfbars penetrate the body.
BTW these are cheap VW nerf bars... I had to modify the frame attachment bar to fit the Porsche.

Thanks Bill - nice tub. That's just what I had in mind.
How did you modify the VW bars? Just redrilll the bolt holes?
