Re: Hot Starting Problems

#32 Post by Dan Kalinski »

Have been having slow starter problems ever since the '63 Cab was returned to us after restoration/"sorting". After reading this thread, decided to make it right or send it off to someone that could find the issues.

Cleaned all the electrical connections, Check. Removed the lug from the main line from battery to starter, cleaned, re-soldered. Check. Made sure connections at battery were clean/tight. Check. Battery at full charge. Check. Removed # 50 wire from starter switch cleaned socket, removed bullet and re-soldered, Check. Touched the #30 socket with the #50 wire............ Same. Slow. Cranking. Check. Installed the hot wire as John Brooks suggest, Same. Slow. Cranking. Check.

Have the relay installed, but not by me and I no longer have the instructions to check it out. OK, with spark plugs removed, starter will spin the engine nicely. Plugs in, Same. Slow. Cranking.

Must be the bushing. Short the battery to starter armature, Nice. Fast. Motor. Sounds. Check.

Retest with hot wire........ Same. Slow. Cranking.

Have a new bronze bushing and the installed one comes out via the 1/2" tap method. New one goes in with a shop made tool... That was fun.

To the issues at hand. What do you guys see on the starter?

Lots of paint.

Reinstalled starter after a good cleaning and paint removal and now; Nice. Fast. Cranking. Check, Check and Check.

Still would like to get the instructions to reinstall the relay.

Thanks.
