"Elizabeth Dole" type brake light positioned in top of car

#1 Post by Neal Patton »

Does anyone have a recommended "Elizabeth Dole" high mounted and high viz brake light system?

If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

I installed the single "above the rear window" model from David's post. A simple installation and the wires are nearly invisible. The bracket slips into the rubber window seal. I don't know if it really does any good, but I ain't been rear-ended yet. The only down side--it puts a glow in the rear of the car after dark.

Visibility from the rear is much better from the single high-mounted bar, than from the smaller units mounted behind the air-grills of the engine the compartment lid.

Hi, Folks,

I've put 3-4 of Jack's led lights in the upper back window of several coupes and used his brackets to install inside the engine grill, as well. Great folks, great product.

The wiring instructions for this 3rd brake light describe routing the positive wire forward through the car so it can be terminated on the master brake cylinder switch.

Surely connecting the 3rd light to the existing brake light circuit at the back of the car would be a lot easier. Would this not work ?

Yes. BUT, if it is separately wired and independent from the car's wiring it will be more fail-safe in the event that their is a problem with the stock system.

There are several threads here about wiring the stock brake light system to an installed mechanical brake light switch mounted at the brake pedal as a fail-safe in the event there is a problem with with the master cylinder hydraulic switch.

also the instructions say (or at least did on mine several years ago) that "light on" time is quicker when it doesn't have to go through the old 6v wires

If you don't wire the CHMSL to the brake light switch as opposed to picking it up at the light, methinks it will flash with the turn signal, no?
