Glue for glass

#1 Post by Michael Sparacino »

Can anyone help? I'm putting my windows back together and wanted to know if anyone knows what kind of glue I can use to attach the vent window to the metal frames?

Thanks for the help.

It will be interesting to see what the professionals recommend. When I did mine, I used RTV (Silicon Seal). It sticks very well but is removable if need be. You could use epoxy if you never want to get them apart.

I used gorilla glue. It stays pliable and I believe it is removable with solvent.

In the distant past I used epoxy to attach a rear view mirror mount to the new windshield on my 912. Bad idea. Epoxy shrinks as it cross links and hardens. It cracked the inner layer of glass. A Dentist friend says this shrinkage is also a problem with epoxy fillings. It can crack teeth.

I used urethane like modern cars use for their windshields. Worked very well. Black silicone sounds good as well, and much easier to get off your hands, and easier if you need to take it apart again.

I use strips of body putty by 3M. Pliable, removable, seals well and you can adjust the vent window for a good fit.

Weatherstrip adhesive is not that heavy bodied, it could work but not as well as the other suggestions here. There is some space to fill between the frame and the glass.

No claim of expertise regarding doing 'body stuff'; winging it.
I used black RTV and have had no problem with it in the 12(?) years since.

I used clear RTV and haven't had any issues.
