Here's an assortment of other period photos showing this nose. There's 100s more.

Joris,
Your T-1 knowledge is unparalleled.

Here is the front of my T-1 #57143 born in August of 1956

From what I could measure the distance is 1.812" or 46mm (approximately from the top of the signal/driving light to the headlight bucket.)

my battery box has no indentation.

Hope this helps.

Joris,

I applaud your narrowing down the front clip change....
I'm not trying to deviate from this thread but this has me thinking.

Do you know when the factory went from wheels (painted the same as the color of the car) to silver wheels. Other '56 owners I've spoken to firmly believe that "all" pre A and '56 A's should have the wheels the same color of the car.

I'm wondering if this was another one of those '56 quandaries so noted by this front clip change.
(between 56583- 57143 definitely T-1) As opposed to a definitive blanket "truism" of a T-1 to T2 change.

An observation, from looking for dated stamped wheels for my car #57143 August 56, I have found that a large percentage of later T-1 wheels were consistently silver. I somehow doubt that this large percentage of wheels could all have come from silver bodied 356's.

I think it would be nice to know when the silver wheels became the standard.

Inquiring minds?

I have the 1 1/16 headlight to turn signal measurement. Also, good to hear the screws were in correctly, was about to re-drill them horizontal!!!

Hi Chip,

Thanks for sharing the particulars of your nose and the battery box. The early T1's have many special quirky details which are not well understood and most of the times overlooked during restoration. Some, but not all are:

- Front clip
- Battery box,
- Cloth headliners on the very first couple of cars
- Engine bay liners on the very first cars
- Undercoated lids
- Brushed black out under the dash instead of sprayed
- Gauges
- Alu plates for rear seat back
- Funky interior options
- etc.

On the painted wheels, very hard to say. I am pretty sure the early cars sat up to summer of '56 all had body colored wheels. After that the picture gets more murky. I have one car in my files with a 6 digit number which appears to have had body colored wheel (aqua) originally.

What we need is more members posting their details but with 99% of cars restored or furbished in some way or the other accurately documenting these details becomes a real challenge.

Thanks for sharing Gary, The early noses had the signal light holes on the 6 and 12 0'clock position. That way the holes on the bezel would be in the 3 and 9 o'clock position when mounted (the bezels gets screwed to the light base). You might want to check to see what is going on on your car.

James, thanks for sharing the awesome period pictures showing the early nose detail. Let's hope that one day a vendor will offer one

I appreciate everyone’s posting on this subject. James, Joris, et al. I have a 55 Speedster in my shop and have modified the RD A nose. Jack Staggs (his shop is across the driveway from mine) had the idea of cutting each side out off center and rotating the pieces so the cutout is the same but once I flipped them from side to side the horn grill opening was moved up in the right location.

Part 2 is modifying the chin so the nose hangs down just below the bumper. How I accomplished was by cutting a slit just above the lower return and using my shrinker/stretcher tool to move the metal into the shape it needed to be and adding a filler piece. I hope my posts can help someone down the road just as others have helped me with their measurements and pictures in this thread.

Trevor pondered the question 'til it hurt,
how to make a T-2 clip to revert.
'Til old wizard Jack told him how,
so he's got a T1 clip now,
but I wish Santa would bring him a new shirt.

(with apologies to all concerned.... Merry Christmas guys.)

He does great work, as shown in his photos and also the ones in his 3-piece car thread. If he did sloppy work, we couldn't have fun with him. Wish I were closer, Trevor. I've got a creaking sound coming from the area just in front of the foot wells and it isn't caused by a dry suspension. Worse when cold. If I can ever pin it down, I might have to have you massage some of my sheet metal. (The tin work that took place while in the PO's possession was done by Wayne Williams Metal Shaping in Orange. Don't know his reputation or quality of work. I've got a list of everything that he supposedly did, so maybe I'll find a clue in there somewhere.)
