356 Speedster color

#1 Post by Scheuer Florian »

Dear all,

I recently bought a 356 Speedster built in May 1957 in the color combination white/blue leatherette
As there is nowhere mentioned the color code (neither in the cartex nor in the COA) of the color white I assume it is 5713 (Reutter 713) Glacier White as the regular White was only available in 1954-55

Can anybody help me out with this?
thanks a lot

If the color currently on your car were Glacier White you would know it. That color is unique and has a bit of a green tint to it and i would think that a blue interior would not look good at all.

Perhaps look under the dashboard or pull a few interior panels to see if you can find remnants of what might be original paint on the car to learn the correct color.

Some Ivories have a little Yellowish tint to it. My late Oct. 29 '57 Speedster (for the '58 T2 series.) has White listed on Factory papers; Only the plain Kunstharthzlack plate (w/out the Farbton Nu. 5704) exists on the door hinge cover.

Heinrich's (and others) "Speedster Type 40" might have it, sourced from the Reutter documents. If you don't have access you might email me the VIN and I can look up and let you know.....1322 speedsters were white; 346 Ivory according to their reasearch.

You might want to order a Karosserie Reutter Certificate which should have all the data from the Karosserie Reutter records.

It's been discussed in:

By the way, Glacier White is definitely a greenish white, maybe a very light green.

Here's a photo of a Karosserie Reutter Certificate which happens to show Glacier White (R 713 gletscherweiß):

Just for jollies, I checked Porsche Speedster Typ 540. There were only two instances of color code 713 after the first 1958 chassis number:
  1. 84490
  2. 84862

unfortunately too many colors on the car which makes it impossible to say what was original

........ according to Heinrich, this car was 603 white, a 1600 N. "Ivory" -04 was offered from the beginning. White -03 showed up in the 54 list of colors. There were a number of 603 Speedsters before and after his car..10-20 or so.

Absent an original color deep down and hidden in some corner, I would go with Heinrich and his experts and his information directly from Reutter. In fact, that is the only available reference at this point.

So much for infallible Porsche documentation back in the day....the color is totally absent from their documents.

Hi Roy,
White isn't so simple isn't it? My first 356 was a white 1964 coupe, light Ivory? My father owned 2 white 356s, a 1959 Cabriolet Hardtop and a 1963 Super 90 coupe, Ivory(sometimes called Dark Ivory)? I recall early Speedsters as being a bright white vs the later cream tinted Ivory. So what kind of white is our car in question and what white do you think is most common?

"Speedster White". Almost refrigerator white. I had a 55 waaaaay back (1978 or so) that I bought for $1000 and almost passed because it was soo white. Turned out it was a Carrera (no motor) Course back then who wanted a Carrera? And who wanted a running and driving 300 SL Roadster for $17000???? With both tops......silver over red.......

Speedster White, or Reutter 603 White, as it was named, was a very common color used on Speedsters from 1954 through 1956, even though it's listed as '54-'55. If your car is a T-1 '57, it is quite possible that the factory painted it the same white used on '56's, Reutter 603 White. Bob
