Think the T5 early and late funnels and T6 funnels are steel, the earlier ones (A's and earlier, if they had one) are the pot metal ones. Here's a shot of the two most likely pipes, the one with the taper is seriously strong...

You are correct about the funnels, but the outer bumper guard is what cannot be welded to.

Because the tail pipes are too short, the funnels do not always direct exhaust comlpetely out. That is why the chrome blackens up.
I went down to o'reilys an found extension pipes that fit perfect over exhaust pipes and extend into funnels far enough to direct exhaust amd eliminate carboning up over riders.
Added a set screw and all is now held in place.

I'm with Martin and think the slightly blackened bumper guards are fine. An occasional shot of of Windex and a paper towel will help keep the blackened area more slight.
