Graham; the hole you refer to was not drilled wrong! You are showing the cover upside-down in relation to the early cover. You are lining up the tach drive holes, which are opposite from each other. The small pump hole is on the top, while the large pump hole is on the bottom. Flip your small pump cover and take another photo next to the large pump cover; now the holes line up.
In other words, there is NO way to use the later cover on an early engine. Period.....

I discussed this method with Andy Prill when I wanted a full flow system on my small pump engine but he preferred his own time proven approach which appears to take the oil from the TOC cavity, through an oil filter under the rear wing and the back into the case here. (red/blue fitting)
Mike, can I download that image and save it for those who ask in the future?
