Remove Shift Knob

#1 Post by Joseph Jablecki »

My Shift Knob is on really tight
I do not want to ruin anything
Does it just twist off? Right hand threads?

Twists off; right hand threads. Hopefully not glued on. Maybe some gentle heat to warm it up a bit.

Retainer nut only on aftermarket wood knobs. Never have seen one on an original plastic knob.

Thanks to all. It is the original Plastic Knob so I guess I just need to twist harder. Perhaps even warm up a little with a heat gun.

A rubber strap wrench like this one will help without damaging the knob. Only a couple buck at Home Depot, Lowe's, hardware store, etc.

If it takes a strap wrench like that one to remove the knob, it would be advisable to put some sort of counter-hold on the lever. The mechanism wasn't designed to withstand unlimited torque.
Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.....

I've had similar issues. I always dose with a penetrating oil and let it sit for a day.
