door handle escutcheons
356 members having my cab serviced at porscheCLASSIC. asked to change ecsut. on door handles. px quote w/o install. was$300. was told they come from Germany. I already purchased a set from Stoddard for $ 33. theyre not claiming them to be orig. Is this possible or just Porsche being Porsche? tom

What year/model 356? What part number did they use? How much was the labor?

Re: door handle escutcheons
Thomas,
Which Porsche Classic Partner dealer did the work on your car?
Presently, there are five such official Classic dealers in the US:
Gaudin Porsche of Las Vegas
Hennessy Porsche North Atlanta
Paul Miller Porsche Parsippany, NJ
Porsche of Colorado Springs
Porsche South Bay, Hawthorne, CA
Of course, a normal Porsche dealer should accept work on any Porsche model. The invoice from a Porsche dealer should list the parts installed by part number and price each. Labor charges are listed separately.

Re: door handle escutcheons
brad the work was not done because I questioned the cost of the escut. the svc. mgr. said he would get back to me with a px. check. I gave paul miller a shot because of several good reviews Isaw on line. truthfully, living in the metro-ny area isn't 356 friendly. when service is required, the car has to go out of the area. all knowledgeable shops are out of state. thx tom

Re: door handle escutcheons
Can that be any more than a 20 minute fix for both sides? Mind boggling estimate and a good reason never to set foot in a Porsche dealership with a 356. Find a good upholstery shop, restorer, body shop, whatever or do it yourself.

Re: door handle escutcheons
I doubt that Porsche had NOS escutheons on the shelf. They or someone else probably had them made and they put them in a Por$che bag and charge Por$che prices. The labor rate is probably about $200/hr.
My opinion: buy them from one of our vendors or if you want original ones, put the word out on our classifieds. Fairly easy to do and like Steve says, a 20 minute job.

Re: door handle escutcheons
I can't imagine there is any visible difference between what out vendors sell and the Porsche dealer. The door caps and panels come off with a screw driver. You might need a "Third" hand getting the drift pins out of the interior door handle and window winder (Maybe not). Once you've done it, easy by yourself. The door handle is just one screw. Maybe an hour the first time, 30 min. tops the second time. Give it a shot. ...................Jim.
