I'm gonna guess that the area where the generator sits was filed to a larger diameter… in order to accommodate an alternator I presume… and the larger alternator body protrusions also precipitated cutting off the back bolt mount for the oil filler??? just a guess...

The large part of a VW alternator is at the pulley end so the wrong bolt hole is cut of if that is the purpose.
