There appears to be 2 different types of regulators out there one with 3 connectors on the bottom and the other with connectors on the sides with a BOSCH logo on cover and a screw in center of cover. My car has the latter one. Are these two completely different regulators or are they interchangeable?

Are these two completely different regulators? Yes.
Are they interchangeable? Yes. With proper attention to what gets connected to what.
Do a search on the web site. There was a recent Registry Magazine article on the charging system.
