Rear swing axle tubes, lip for brake plate centering?

#1 Post by Juha Vane »

In my existing 741 dual front mount transmission the bearing housing that is fixed to the axle
with a pin has no lip to center the brake backing plate. The lip is in the bearing plate that is
fitted with 4 screws.
Now I'm purchasing an other set of axle tubes but here this lip is "opposite", it's in the bearing
housing that is fixed to axle tube. The bearing cover itself has no lip.
These tubes has part # 644.34.101 The Photos are from these axle tubes.

Why is there 2 different types, what is correct? It does not make much difference because the
bearing will be partially in the axle tube bearing housing and partially in the bearing plate so
everything should be nicely centered.
The more I learn about this little car, the less I seem to know...

The lip in part #6 is correct; 1952-1963.
The bearing cover also should have a lip; if yours does not, it is probably the wrong VW part.
The view of the side of the cover shows it to be the wrong one. There should be a lip in both, so the O-ring can seal properly.

Thanks Vic.
Now I know why mine are leaking oil, axle tubes that came with the car are wrong as there
is no lip, only in bearing cover.
But now I believe I have required parts; the "new" axle tubes with a lip and my original covers
that also have a lip.
