Bob,

A broken spring tab on the cam/spring plate pretty much turns the rest of the distributor into spare parts. These are unique to each distributor, though the 022 and BR18 are the same. I've got photos of most of them which I'll post on the web site some day when I have a little time. The pins and their positions as well as the contours of the bottom fingers are very different for 383, BR9, BR18/022, and 031/061 as well as all VW distributors like the 019, 010, BR8, etc. There's really no easy way to fix these and once you break one you find out that they don't take much to fail. They should be pried away ever so slightly to remove a spring. Bending them back to replace the spring is best done by a light tap with a tack hammer. I've broken a few, it's always one of those oh $&@# moments.

Thanks Bruce for that clarification of the differences. I have never had the opportunity to compare two different distributors side by side and stripped down so you may have stopped me making a critical mistake. I was under the impression of course that all the centrifugal advance distributors would be the same. I knew the aluminum bodied ones were different but not the steel bodied ones.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

37 is good and I use 87 fuel also. Much better than 33.

Bruce,

I was so careful to leverage the small tab just enough to remove the spring. I guess it had been done before. It didn't break until sometime after I reinstalled it. The repair is working, but I suspect that it is probably responsible for the idle problem??? I am still looking for a replacement 022. It is amazing how few people know the differences in the distributors. I have been offered everything but the right distributor. Thank you for your help along the way. Drove the car for it's first real outing to a Cars and Coffee at Kiawah Island in SC this past weekend (70+ miles total). Red sure attracts a lot of attention. I have to go back and finish a small punch list that showed up, but they are small (Horn stopped working, etc.). I am not sure how long it will take for the smile to leave my face after almost 38 years of simply pushing it everywhere it needed to go.

Bob -

I've got several 022s and as well as most others (even some 383s). Send me a PM if you're interested in a rebuilt one.

My 66 Porsche 912 engine has a Delco Remy HFI distributor. I know nothing about it as it was installed before I bought the car. Seems to run perfect but if it were ever to break I don’t know what I would do. Any comments? Thanks Bob

That looks similar to a VW Type 1 DUI (Davis Unified Ignition) distributor. Built in coil and super hot spark. But I'd bet the advance curve is closer to a VW 009 distributor that what should be on your motor, i.e. a BR18/022. You'd probably be better off with the correct distributor. If you want to retain electronic ignition, go with a Pertronix I. A standard coil is fine or use a 40K version if you'd rather

I thought about carrying an extra Bosch 12v coil and a 022 Bosch distributor in my tool kit but even a used distributor is between $350 and $600. I think it be cheaper to carry an extra brand new DUI electronic distributor for $399 total!

Robert, if that VW purposed distributor, has the 009 curve, it is inadequate to give you original distributor performance... incomparable!

Take it to a distributor machine equipped shop, and find someone who knows how to interpret it, and have it tested!

It's not always $& cents, but... Common Sense!

Like I said, I do have a repair part for the spring tab. $50 will pay for the part and the installation. You can let me know at: jenkins356@sbcglobal.net.

I have a line on a 050 distributor, would that be when I could use?

They aren't bad, much closer than a 009. The total advance is about 13° at the distributor and 26° at the crankshaft. Here's a link to info. on them and other suitable distributors:
