I am restoring a 56 356A coupe. When I bought it there was a VW engine installed. I want to find out what the original engine and transmission numbers were. I assumed i could obtain them by paying Porsche for a COA. They tell me they will not divulge that information giving some ridiculous explanation as to why.
Can anyone tell me where I can obtain this information?

Re: How to find the engine number
Steve, one of our listed vendors " Elevenparts A.G. " can email you the engine # of your car if you provide them a photo of your stamped chasis #. I'm not sure if they have trans # as well but that would be a good question to ask when you e-mail the site.

Re: How to find the engine number
Porsche no longer supplies engine or transmission numbers on the Certificate of Authenticity unless you supply the numbers, i.e. they will only confirm the numbers.
The stated reason is to prevent Porsche being involved in fraudulently restamped numbers. Perhaps they're overly cautious.
There are people who can get you a copy of the Kardex which is the main source of information for the Certificate of Authenticity. The going rate's about $ 200.

Re: How to find the engine number
okay, I want to get the KARDEX for my car. How do I do it? I would think that Porsche would have a simple web page set up where we enter the VIN, give a credit card number and that's it. Likely not. Help!
