Ebay B voltage regulator looks strange

#1 Post by Harold Singh »

Unfortunately I already bought this but this hook ups are D- DF B- across the bottom. This doesn’t match up with a B regulator even though it was advertised as one. Any idea what it fits? Has anyone made one like this work? I’m guessing I should try and get my money back. Just looking for other thoughts on this odd part in case I’m missing something. It also seems the bracket doesn’t line up to mount.

Hi Harold
the cover looks correct. who knows who made the rest of it but if it works electrically you are ok. i have seen
Delco/American Bosch and others that use the same or close construction but as you state it is not as usual as delivered.

Adam appreciate the link. You’re right about that and I could have sworn I checked your page before I bid on this one.
I think I might invest in one ready to run after I return this one. Any suggestions for that option? Mine C reg is still working but, I want the better B model to protect the generator.

Hi Harold
Might be a neg ground reg. Even if you get an original regulator it is best to have it checked out/adjusted by a good electrical shop. Most will verify the voltage adjustment but few will check the over-current. Richard Miller tested quite a few back in the day and found many not as advertised to the extent that correction/replacement was called for.

Who is the current (<-pun intended) person recommended to test, adjust and worst case repair these?

I’ll try that again. Last time I heard back from the guy that handles his book sales and I asked about Joe doing any work and didn’t hear back.

The last Registry Magazine mentioned that Joe is living in assisted living now. He might be doing work there but maybe not.

Joe would be the best to check it; He just sent back three 2-pole regulators after they were checked (& set) for output regulation.

Hi
I don't think anyone checks the trip current on these regulators and takes as a matter of faith that it is either the no that is stamped or by part no. Even if the current trip is correct it still may not preclude the destruction of the generator in practice. so keep your battery charged and don't add a lot of load.

Assume everything on Ebay is advertised as the wrong part.

Bosch made many regulators that all look the same. The 356B ones were (according to Bosch):

RS/UA 160/6/24 thru Sep 1959
RS/UA 200/6/23 Oct 1959 thru Sep 1962
RS/UAA 200/6/23 Oct 1962 thru July 1963
RS/VA 200/6/3 Aug 1963 onward

For the 160 watt and 200 watt generators, respectively.
