The brake shoe friction material is another factor. The composition of the brake shoe friction material determines how aggressively it bites the rim.

I don't know the exact composition of the Energit lining material but my uncle used to joke that on my dad's 1960 Roadster it must have fossilized. The car was a daily driver for 2 decades and finally in the early '80's my uncle installed new shoes. Now that it's only a weekly driver they will at least outlast me and probably be the last shoes the car sees. And judging by the way my dad drove (I'm no better) the brakes were not babied by any means.
