Hi BJ the condition of course is important but it being a 1500 gives it a lot of intrinsic value if you use it in a pre A or 550 Spyder replica for a FIA legal engine. as a drive able engine someone may have been tempted to increase the displacement and use improper parts which might make restoring it problematic.

Trying to not be petty, but when an admirer is given permission to pop a '55 car's engine lid, just how is said admirer to discern the displacement or use of improper internal parts?

BJ: Welcome to the club. The value of an engine will depend on condition and completeness (heads, carbs., generator, etc. all there). If the engine is frozen and does not turn over, it is worth a few thousand dollars. If you can rotate the fan belt increase that by a few more thousand. If you can make it run, double or triple the total. Show us pictures and tell us if it runs. Now the important question, what will you use it for?

Welcome BJ

I had an engine similar to yours (early 3 piece 546/2) and was contacted by the owner of the car that had an engine 2 numbers off so a deal was struck rather quickly. as stated above, give as many details as you can (carbs, linkages, does it turn etc) and post it in the 'engines for sale' section here. Who knows, someone may be looking for it.

You will have to disassemble the engine to determine its condition. Unless the owner has documents showing that the engine has been rebuilt and NEVER run plan on spending a lot of money on your purchase to get it correct. This is especially true if you have A (pre A) style 3 Piece engine heads and 502 rods The most critical situation is the bore diameter for the crank. Bearings are hard to find and line boring is difficult. JUST REBUILT HAS MANY MEANINGS! al zim
