Reutter certificate

#1 Post by Jules Dielen »

Just received the Reutter certificate for my pre A. Very well worth the wait, what a nice piece of history to have.

It differs from the COA or Kardex a lot. Where this document does not show engine or transmission numbers, it has very interesting information on body and interior details (headliner, carpet and knob colors etc).

Very nicely done cover as well, highly recommended, thank you Guido.

Thank you for the information, Jules.

From your experience, what does it entail to obtain the certificate?

Yes! Its right on most accounts, but not sure on seats. Mine are cloth with leatherette sides. Headliner is correct and steering wheel now too :)

another cool part about these is they actually show color samples of the materials they used. Not the actual material, but it gives you a lot better idea of how the car left the plant. Very impressed with it.

Seats look correct. The "Seats combination" probably means the sides and back are blau k'leder. Not sure of the original German there. Is it "Seiten und Fond"?

Interpreting these Reutter build sheets is not simple 65 years later I suspect.

Who or what is ERA, the provider of the blue vinyl?

James, Edwin

for Sitze (seats) it says dark blue cloth (mfg Häfele), and right below it is Sitze-Kombination (seat combo) blue artificial leather (Mfg ERA). I would assume that is the rear part of the seat back (and hopefully the sides, because that is what it has now)

'door panels and rear' also says dark blue cloth and the 'emergency seats and emergency seat backs' show blue vinyl / dark blue cloth. I am not sure what part of that would be vinyl, it's all cloth on mine.

The carpet is Blue Boucle by Besmer and the seams (Teppicheinfassung) are also blue, but do not specify cloth or vinyl.

here is a pic of the material sheet. I really dig the way they did this.

Jules, on the rear seats for your car (1952 style), the only part that might be vinyl would be the where the carpet covers the parcel shelf, the front of the parcel shelf could be vinyl, as it shows when the rear seat back is up. It could also be cloth. But I dont' think it was carpet. 1953 and later cars always have carpet on top of parcel shelf and upholstery (cloth or vinyl) on the front. The upholstery is sewn to the carpet. Some 1953 cars (like mine) also have leather or vinyl on the seat back sides several inches in from the ends. See photos below.

Your seats have more ribs in the cushions though, which are the 1952 style. They reduced the number of these for 1953 (starting at least by chassis 11958). You can see that style in the photo below.

Thank you, James, that is very interesting. I see in the pic you posted that the seats only have cloth in the center. Is that correct for both 52 and 53? My surfaces are all cloth, only the sides are vinyl.

I will check the parcel shelf.
