What is this electrical remnant?

#1 Post by Robert Reed »

Hey Guys,
I’m working at replacing the indecipherable spaghetti under the dashboard of my 62 coupe and found this thing. Anyone know what the heck it is or was?
Thank you,
Bob

That looks like a reostat for dropping a voltage or dimming a light. Has your car been converted to 12V? It may be for dropping 12v to six volts. Not a good way in the long run but works.

John, my car has not been converted to 12v, but at one time in it’s life it did have a/c. There was several wires that had been spliced under there. With that in mind I decided to strip out the crap and am putting a replacement front harness in.
I’m really hoping I’m not biting off more than I can chew; I do have Joe Leoni’s book to help me.
That might actually be a part of a rheostatic control; I don’t really know what it was attached to before I pulled it out. By the color of wires maybe dash lights???
Thank you for your input,
Bob

I am putting my 1962 B back together after a complete disassembly...and this doesn't look familiar.

The pic of the mystery part appears to be a variable resister or pot of some sort or another...and my car didn't have one of those.
