Convertible d
I'm looking at a convertible d reported to have matching numbers engine. I'm going to go look at it but a mechanic who know the car says the case number doesn't match. The top piece does match. The car is a nice drive. Is this a car to avoid and what is a fair deduction for a nice driver quality convertible d normal with matching number 3rd piece but non-matching number case?

Correct case halves are a lot easier to come by than correct 3rd piece. A bargaining point to be sure but not a deal breaker in my opinion.

Re: Convertible d
Is it a 10% deduction or less in a good driver quality convertible d?

Re: Convertible d
I have often seen 15-20% for non matching engine. I would assume much less with correct 3rd piece but non matching case halves. Adam would have a better idea I would think.

If the calculation shows a date that is close, say months prior to the car's build date, it may be from the factory. If not, somebody replaced a bad case with the one in the car now. I don't see it as a big issue if the rest of the car passes your tests.
