My first bra

#1 Post by Richard Sjolund »

Every year about this time I drive Ruby - my 1964 356 C from Iowa to Arizona for the winter. I try to beat the snow and Ice on I 40 - and in the mountains north of Phoenix. I love the drive down - about 1,650 miles - and the drive back in April. But - stone chips and bugs are a consequence.

I bought a used Colgan Bra from a 356 from a fellow 356 owner in the Midwest 356 club. It did not come with instructions. My only hints from other users were to apply lots of wax to the areas that the bra will cover.

Are there any other instructions about how to fit the bra to my car and how to tighten it? How about a YouTube video??? Anyone have problems with the paint getting scuffed or the bra flapping around at speed?

You might be able to somehow snug up the elastic cords. I, too, have a Colgan bra. I haven't experienced any scuffing but I can see a loose one doing so. I've seen some people use painters' tape where the bra meets the body, above the head lights, at the clips, etc.

I use folded strips of felt on the hooks held in place w/rubber bands. On the later cars--B 's and C's, you can added a towel
stuffed under the upper elastic strip to keep it from flapping.

Does anyone use a product like Xpel? Any problems with that? Half way up the hood or the whole front end?

I'll be in Scottsdale for a short visit on Nov 3 - - and dropping off my car for storage in Mesa. I fly back home to Iowa on Nov. 4 - and then we'll be back for all of January and February - and the first 2 weeks of March. We make the round trip in our Audi A4 Quattro - through the December snow and ice. After we drive back home in March Ruby stays in storage until I fly back in mid April for a drive back home.

4till4 will be a regular stop. Our rental house is near 68th and Camelback ... and it has a 2 car garage ...

I have VERY BRIGHT dash lights in my 1964 C - thanks to you!

My 1964 C coupe - "Ruby" - and I made a 1.730 mile trip from Iowa city, Iowa to Scottsdale, Arizona - staying ahead of ice, snow and salt trucks. Ruby is now in a secure storage area, waiting for my wife and me to arrive back in Scottsdale on New Year's eve day.

The BRA went on easily - with lots of tension on the holding clips. I added some pieces of felt under the "L" shaped clips that fit under the fenders. There was a lot of vibration at 75 MPH on a day with 40 MPH headwinds on I 40. The BRA movement was over the hood ornament - the area over the fenders looked quiet.

When I got to Scottsdale I removed the BRA and took Ruby to a detailer. After a wash and a wax I could find no scuffing or scratches - -or dead bugs or fresh stone chip. Great. That was the plan.

All the admirers along the way liked Ruby and the BRA. It was a good idea. I'm looking forward to a winter of fun with the Arizona Outlaws --- and lots of coffee at 4till4 ....
