Worm Style Axle Boot Clamps

#1 Post by Peter Boettcher »

Looking for info on a source for the narrow worm style axle boot clamps that can be used on the split boots.
The ones supplied with the Febi boots I purchased seem a bit iffy on clamping the boot compared to the worm style clamp.
Our usual vendors do not seem to have these available.

Thanks!!

I would just call Vic, ask him what he uses, and probably buy 2 from him.

Thanks Guys!
I had looked at Stoddard, SMC, Pelican Parts, and did not see them.
Great Info

The Stoddard reference is to one that is more authentic, and doesn't have pressure points on the rubber like the worm clamps. You do need a PhD in clamps to work them, though.

If you drive in rain or wet roads you might want to order some stainless hose clamps from marine supply or get good aircraft ones.
The Jbugs ones are probably chinese and may rust.

Can anyone confirm the optimal size for the screw-type clamps for the axle boots? 9mm appears to be a good width. Measured my one-piece boots and it looks like the clamp area diameters are about 52mm small end and 90mm large end. Found this chart and logic would say somewhere close to min and max adjustability, but don't want it to be so short that it is hard to get the end started. Is there a best practices size?

Unfortunately, the B parts manual only lists them by part number. The smaller ones: 644.34.191.1 (999.512.102.02).
The larger ones, two different numbers: 644.34.191.1 (999.512.103.02) and 999.511.045.02.

Checking part numbers by Google says 9 x 700mm and 9 x 100mm. I'd measure the O.D.'s of the boot to make sure.

The parts manual list them as worm type, or just some appropriate band clamp that fits?
I’m guessing those Google numbers are length, not diameter.

Good point, Martin. No mention of type. Weren't the originals the strap type like used for the heater hoses?

Yes, my question was relative to this type. With everything going on in the area (various cables, camber regulator, etc.) don't have the patience for cotter pin configuration and don't have the tool for the pinch the tab configuration.
