Rear Wire Harness Routing Question

#1 Post by Jack Banville »

Hello,
I bought this car disassembled and although the harness is intact, it was pulled away from its routing points and bundled. I'm working on the rear layout and can't determine where the upper harness enters the engine compartment. The apron around the perimeter of the engine compartment has been replaced with a new one if that matters. Once there, is it fastened using the metal tabs that run vertically and horizontally on the firewall? Can someone help?
Thank you,
Jack

As you are looking into the engine compartment, there should be a hole in the far right corner of the fire wall. Part of the harness goes up to the regulator, etc. and the other section snakes under the engine tin to the rear lights, etc.

If you engine perimeter metal was replaced there will be no hole. You will have to drill one. That is what I did, then found an appropriate sized grommet so that harness would not chafe where it went through.

This link will help some: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=43521&hilit=engine+ ... ent+wiring What year car? Be aware that you will end up with one spare black wire in the engine compartment when you are done. It is usually coiled on itself after entering the engine compartment viewtopic.php?f=1&t=35303&hilit=engine+ ... e&start=15

Jack,

As Doug has mentioned you may need to drill that hole on the right corner as I did also.

Here are a few pictures I found a couple of years back that helped me understand it better.

Great photos Eric. They also show what happens to the rear wiring after engine compartment branches off. It continues to the rear a short distance, then goes through another hole to exterior where it wraps around the rear to taillights, reverse light etc.
