Those old steel oil coolers have a couple other thing holding them back. The newer aluminum ones cool the oil a lot better and they aren't as heavy, thus helping prevent the crankcase "crack at the oil cooler stand" syndrome.
Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.....

John,
I've never understood this "increase requirements for originality" regarding motor components. Has any car show judge ever looked inside a motor or fan shroud?

Hmmm. I always replace pistons, jugs, oil coolers and rods. Cheaper than the labor, and safer by far.

I'm surprised Adam is not showing off his 55 gallon drum of original cheese head screws.

Re: Value of used Pistons/Cylinders
Before there were dedicated cylinder blocks available to hot-rodders, 'heat-cycled' iron blocks were the preferred starting parts for serious engine development. The assumption was that they had wiggled left and right as far was they were gonna, and now you could assume they pretty much stabilized.
I have to admit to yielding to such un-supported claims; I've had more than a couple 'used up' iron cylinder sets bored and honed for use with 1720 forged pistons.
With good results, but no control sets to prove the effort.

They are worth their weight in gold to the cognescenti.
