"C" Gas Tank Cap

#1 Post by Lukas van Rooyen »

Does anybody have a picture of an orignal '64 Gas Tank Cap. Any idea where I can find one? I do not want a replacement one.
Thanks

Here's an original looking one on E-bay. 356 member and trustworthy.

Oh, forgot to say that it is a RHD and the RHD's did not change to outside filler system until 1965. So my car is '64 and it still has the filler cap inside the trunk. Wonder who to ask now.
Thanks so much for all the replies. I truly appreciate it
Perhaps it is the same filler cap as the late '63 LHD's
Any pictures any one?
Lukas

Contact Mike Smith at PR Services He will know which is the correct cap for your car. It may look like this one: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds ... id=2088807

USA cars stopped using that tank after 61. The 62 T6 cars had through the fender tanks here.

Confusion .......... I guess he wants the much larger tank cap such as in the Samba Mexico City link. BTW, the cap in that link is correct with the fine serrations on the edge and the price is good if not too rusty on the bottom (conveniently not pictured).

The "modern day" cap has wide bumps on the edge -- photos below for comparison

Thanks guys.
Yes I have the one with the wide bumps and I wanted to change to the fine serations if I can find one that I can rescue and also if that is the correct one to use. I will also contact Mike Smith and ask him.

Wanted ads in the Classifieds often yield results if you find what is correct.

MY 1964 RHD 356C chassis #129856 with a CofA build date of 12th June 1964, has the fuel filler in the RH wing and has a filler cap which is identical to that on my 1973 911S. It is fitted with the 60 litre RHD fuel tank which sits on a flat(ish) floor under the tank. See photos

Doug, the one for sale on the Registry is already sold unfortunately. That looked like a perfect sample.

Robin
Our cars are only 202 numbers from each other yet mine has the old tank.
Find attached a pic of it.
Thanks

Lukas Put a WTB ad in the Classifieds.I am sure someone has one in their stash. I inherited a friends 60 Roadster parts stash. I don't remember seeing one but will double check.

Lukas, I do not know exactly when the RHD fuel tank was changed but I do know that your type of tank can be seen in a UK late 1965 model RHD 356SC cabrio with the large central filler cap. The UK 1964/65 RHD coupes seem to have been fitted with the same tank as I have.
