Re: Engine insulation options for a 356C?
Harold, I bought the Stoddard kit, but couldn't bring myself to put it in my C coupe--though it has a clean look. I wanted another Perrone kit, but it wasn't available. I found a very good kit, with great service, from Specialty Cars in Pennsylvania. I saw it at the lit meet. It has the backing materials like the original material, and is not just tarpaper. Brad, my car is a Karmann 64 C, 218012.
Alex, thanks for the post! It looks like the stoddard repro has some fiber on it too, but the stuff in my car is more tan in color. I'll be out there tomorrow and will try to grab a pic or 2.

Stoddard kit looks better than when I bought it several years ago. It didn't have the backing then and it was grey. OK Now I get it. I used what is now their cheap at $393.75 kit.

Ron here is where I linked the higher priced kit. Stoddard offers a claimed perfect match version.Harold Singh wrote:Here is the one I found also at stoddard, and supposedly exact but $1776.00

Harold, the Stoddard kit that i bought but didn't use was gray without backing material. The new Stoddard kit looks to be much improved and is similar to the one Specialty Cars made for me. John Laettner

john laettner,
Can you give me a contact for Specialty Cars in Pennsylvania ?
What price did you pay for the kit ?
The Stoddard kit at $1776 seems a little high !! as everything else is 1/4 to 1/2 that !!

Below is the link to Specialty Cars sound deadening, which I believe has prices. It's cheaper than Stoddards and closer than most, but it appears to use jute pads instead of coir pads (coconut) like Stoddard's.
It's simple economics, authenticity vs. cost. If you care about authenticity, it's going to cost you. If you don't care, it's not going to cost you nearly as much. Either way, the car will drive exactly the same....

Looking at the new Stoddard kit (missed on Harold's first link), it seems a bit better than The Parts Shop kit I bought years ago, which is no great surprise. Bill did a terrific job for the time and outside of its condition, most folks would assume it's original.MarioManzo wrote:It's simple economics, authenticity vs. cost. But discerning eyes know, and as the cars gain in value, some folks are willing to risk more in making better and better repro parts, albeit at higher costs.

Some how I do not see the extra authenticity is worth double to triple the price !!
I would put the less expense version in or more likely find another vendor for my money.
I just can't stand being so blatantly fleeced !

I’d like to see more of the home made kits. I wonder if the double tar paper plus some coconut mat like this would look OE if cut to shape properly.

Re: Engine insulation options for a 356C?
Reutter and Karmann used different material for their sound deadening kits. The $393 Stoddard grey kit with waffle pattern is for Reutter. Bill Perrone made some very, very close to original Reutter kits with a layer of tar on back side which has to be melted during installation unlike the grey Stoddard kit uses adhesive. The $1776 Stoddard and Specialty Cars kits are for Karmann, and it has roofing tarpaper like texture. I don’t think Bill Perrone ever made Karmann kits.
