Engine insulation options for a 356C?

#1 Post by Harold Singh »

The only thing I’ve seen is $1776? That seems high but maybe that is all that is available?

We just bit the bullet and bought the $1776 one. It was a hard pill to swallow, but it does look amazing and just like the original one (less the rips, tears, stains, and gas smell) for our Karmann coupe. I don't want to buy another one anytime soon, but wouldn't regret doing it again.

Harold

I installed a Stoddard engine sound deadening kit in my 356B back in 2003 and have been quite happy with it. I did paint it black.

Stoddard's engine insulation kit is less than $400 and when coated with black paint, it looks almost the same as the original. The material from Stoddard is gray and embossed with a waffle pattern that is very close to the original. If you at planning to show it at a judged concours such as the Porsche Parade concours, it must be painted black. A knowledgeable judge will deduct points for the gray insulation material. Also, the gray Stoddard material will absorb oil and gas unless it is sealed.

We fitted the Stoddard kit to my car, but it’s only cardboard and is unlikely to have any effect on the noise from the engine IMO. Surely the original material must have been bitumin sheeting or similarly dense material.

At last year's Parade, the engine judge in the Full Restoration 356 Class noted that my freshly installed gray Stoddard insulation was "gray and should be black" and deducted a tenth. Over the winter, it was painted black. We did not show it at Parade this year, but in August, 2017, we earned our AACA Senior National Award. The insulation is now black and the AACA judges likely would not have known if it should be gray or black. The AACA judges are good, but not as knowledgeable about our cars or as picky as Parade judges.

Has anyone removed and documented original sound deadening for a T6? The material in my car has a thick layer of what looks almost like tarred paper board and behind it and glued to it is a thick layer of coconut fiber in contact with the sheet metal, not unlike what's used in the seats. Is this correct or some later repro?

Sean, I'm guessing the padding looked something like what is shown in my photo. It came off our Karmann coupe and while i Can't say it's original, it's at least from 1984 and matched another local car. The Stoddard kit for $1776 matches all the engine sound deadening pieces perfectly. I'm not necessarily trying to cheerlead for Stoddard, as I think their hood sound deadening kit sucks, but this kit is dead-on awesome!!!!

I know it's a lot of money, but we are extremely happy with the kit and spending our time sourcing the hood area and interior sound deadening.

My 1963 T-6 Karmann coupe 211259 has its original engine insulation and looks identical to the material you described. It has a thick layer of what looks like tar paper board and behind it and glued to it is a thick layer of coconut fiber. It has no waffle imprint.
