4Cam Motorcycle

#1 Post by Nigel Cousins »

I found this photo in a draw in my garage. I know it's Bob Campbell, but when and where is unknown. Can anyone shed some light on this cool machine?
Cheers Nigel

I think it was done at Vasek Polak's place.

That must have been a horrible motorcycle, everything a motorcycle should not be.

Assuming the front brake is even less effective than the R75 I had, it is wildly under-braked. I have to admit I like how it looks.

That would be a wild ride. While on the subject of "where is that 4 cam now", does anyone know what happened to this gem?

Or this engine from Jack McAfee's formula V (I think that is what it is)?

Vasek Polak had a huge warehouse probably 21 feet tall with 2 levels of pallet rack above the floor. I am not sure how I got on a tour of the facility but it was impressive. I think there were at least 4 (my memory is fading) 917 car in his storage and one was brand new. Carrera engines, 911 engines, cars, just everything! No doubt he was the one with the most toys when he left this earth. About the motorcycle. It was not unusual to install a VW or a Porsche engine in the BMW Earls fork motorcycles. you could eliminate all the shrouding on the engine and make an exhaust system. Even the 36HP VW was a substantial increase in horsepower. I rode those bike for probably 15 years and YES the brakes left a lot to be desired. From the factory they did not exceed the capabilities of the brakes. That was not the neatest thing there! Next to and directly behind the motorcycle was a 914/6 sportomatic transmission. This transmission was ready to install. That the factory produced this and we never heard of it was to say the least interesting. Another interesting adventure is the 356 (2 piece case) powered Studebaker Lark rear engine of course! al zim

Tom certainly had one, I remember him burning a hole in a brand new pair of slacks.
