Since we are talking C regulators, I had always thought that the type shown in the ebay ad was for 63-65 VW Karmen Ghia and some VW Type IIs, Number 0190.215.032 45 amp 7 volt, and the 356s were 0190.350.00 50amp, 7v. Didn't the 356s have the pigtail/loop, as did most of the Heavy Duty VW Buses/Campers? Black 45 amp ones were what was listed as the replacement for 356 by many of the suppliers back 40-30 years ago, they were cheaper than the 50amp. the photo shows two silver regulators, the left one has the Pigtail/loop and is 50 amp from a late C, the other came from a 1964 KGhia and is like the bay ad, same decal, same info.
Thought I would throw in my 2 cents worth.

I'm not arguing about the pig tail and the change over in the regulators to not include it. What I am saying is that clearly the Bosch factory was making the voltage regulators and painting the covers black as late as September 1964 as evidenced with an NOS one and a date code. I hear others stating that the switch to silver covers came early enough for 65 C's but to my knowledge, none have shown the date code on a silver VR to back it up.

I'll shut up now.

Headlight rims went from the adjusting screws at 5 and 7 to 2 and 7. Seat hinges were changed as Al already said. The voltage regulators are all over the place and there is nobody that can give a definitive answer as to what is what. My late production C has a large rectangular regulator and it came that way. Most of these changes were running changes and did not happen at the same time as the year model change. The very last 356s got a black fan housing, too.

Robin Walker wrote:Our 1964 RHD 356C coupe chassis #129856 according to the CofA, left production line 12 June 1964 first registered in UK on 3 September 1964, has the silver regulator and is fitted with plain (non badged) hubcaps which I understand were as used on the 904. (Probably the closest I will get to owning one)
Your hub caps are dated 3/63.
