Is there any difference between the '64 and '65 cars?

One I know for sure is mechanical tachometer (1964 model) vs. electronic tachometer (1965). So the redline markings are different- easy to spot.

Interested to know if there are others.

Early '64 VIN plates say Reutter and later say Porsche, after Porsche took Reutter over.

The plate on my '64:

Warren, was your car built in late '64- after the August summer vacation?

For all practical purposes as mentioned electric tach in mid 64 finished changes. Porsche was too busy getting ready for the all new model.

Any operational benefit there, Vic? Mine is the black one and car was made in September 64.

Most prefer the big black one as it is adjustable.

ChuckJ,

I recall that my dad enquired to Porsche about this very point- when the model year changed. He made notes that cars built after the summer holiday shutdown were the next model year. So a car built in October 1964 is a 1965 model.

This makes complete sense wrt operational considerations. The summer break allowed any needed (model year) changes in the manufacturing-assembly process to be implemented easily.

Is there a reference in the parts book to when electronic tachometers appeared?

Chuck - when you say you have the black one - is it the later, smaller style but the cover is black and not silver?

I wonder if that was retrofitted at some point. My 5/64 cab has the smaller, non-adjustable VR. I believe at first, the covers were painted black and then at some point, the went to cad or zinc plating. Maybe early Cs had the old style, large box VR?

Sorry I don't know the production date of my car, after all I've only owned it since 1981 (if that was considered as sarcasm- it was only pointed at ME).
s/n is 218554, has a Karmann body badge and 5200rpm redline electric tach
