1960 356 Ebay

#1 Post by Charles H Jacobus »

Is this really worth $55,000? Of course the answer is yes because it seems it is going to sell, but I think there is $45-60K of cost to make it acceptable and then it's not numbers matching. I would call it a Hagerty #4 at $34,000. But many of you guys know way more than I.

Adam would be a better person to answer but not worth quite that much if I were buying. But if I were looking for a winter project and could do bodywork and paint then maybe.

Single mount transmission would put me off though I was not a bidder anyway.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

Only one bid by someone with no feedback. Could be a BS bid.

David How did you know single mount trans? No front of trans in pictures.

Not sure that it was as low as a Hagerty #4. Certainly not a 3 though. Maybe 3-1/2? Would want to really go over it carefully before bidding on it.

Chassis #. I just worked on one with a chassis # close to this one. According to what I remember this car would have been built in 59 and they changed back to the twin mount in January of 60.
This is an edit.
I just checked the VIN and this would have been a 1960 car and is likely to have been one of the first T5B's with the twin mount trans.

Anything you can drive is worth $35,000-45,000, the sunroof adds value, the wrong engine detracts. But $55,000 if someone is looking for a well sorted driver they can just enjoy is within the realm of possibility.
Remember, not everyone is searching for a fully restored car, or wants a restored car. A lot of guys want something to drive and not be afraid of rain, rocks, or parking lots. My car is like that, I fear no normal stuff when driving it.
So saying this car needs $45,000 to make it acceptable is very subjective, personally I would just enjoy it.

Back in Feb there was some buzz on BAT that there was a structural rust issue around the right torsion bar, but that photo may not have been included in the ebay listing, only on a old craigslist ad. Comment was made by a fellow calling himself 'SOneThreeCoupe'.

http://bringatrailer.com/2017/02/02/dri ... e-356b-t5/

internet unknown SOneThreeCoupe said 'there are rust holes that are structural (junction of front brace and floor bulkhead, bottom of right frame horn under the torsion tube' ) in BAT

So yea, might require work to be safe and yea winning bidder had no feedback record. I wouldn't be surprised if it's back on ebay soon.

Picture on craigslist recently and on eBay ad were not the same as pictures when I first saw it on Craigslist months ago. I remember seeing some holes not shown recently.

Given the original price of $65,000, the new price of $55,000 is looking better. The original ad was from February, so the price is proving to be an obstacle. One thing I learned a long time ago, the market speaks, whether you want to listen or not, it's like the wind, it doesn't care what you think.
If this car sold on ebay for $55,000, that is pretty well sold. To price this car to move it would probably be in the 40's. But if it's your car and you aren't in a hurry, you can hold out. Those of us who do this for a living don't have that luxury.
But if the car has been for sale on and off for over half a year, there is your answer, it's priced too high. Selling these cars is the easiest part of my job. I've never had a 356 that didn't sell, you just have to listen to the market, she will always tell you what you need to know, just maybe not what you want to hear.

Yep Adam, it sold so that's the market but I am still surprised. I'm glad I wasn't trying to sell it- or buy it! There's really not that much difference in my mind between $55K and $70K and I would think for that you could get a lot nicer one for that. And my experience with cancer is that once it starts, it just wants to continue- especially if it's a driver and seeing the environment.
